Last week we were treated to a special evening of music from the movies. The Joint Concert with CLSG, in which well over 100 singers and instrumentalists from both schools took part, saw the performance of a varied selection from this vast repertoire of music written for the silver screen.
Starting with an excerpt from Strauss’ ‘Also sprach Zarathustra’, better-known as the sunrise at the start of Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, the hour-long programme also had time for music by Mozart (the Requiem), Saint-Saens (the Organ Symphony) and Bruckner (an eccentric piece, ‘Ecce sacerdos’, for choir, organ and three trombones). Of course, no concert of movie music would be complete without a liberal sprinkling of John Williams (Call of the Champions, written for the 2002 Olympics), Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, Interstellar) and Ennio Morricone, with Year 13 CLSG pupil, Georgina, performing the exceptionally beautiful solo part from ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’.
The Great Hall stage has perhaps never been as full as it was on Tuesday night, and the same goes for the audience: empty seats were even hard to come by on the balcony. This was a concert on a spectacular scale – one which featured the fearsomely powerful full organ at least three times – and can only be described as a tremendous success.
Congratulations to all the performers, conductor Mr Quesnel, as well as several other members of the music team who have worked tirelessly this term to produce a stunning evening.
