Anthea Bell work in exchange with Queen’s College Oxford and the foundation aims to promote language learning across the UK. The workshop gave pupils the opportunity to translate and adapt a text from Surzhyk, a hybrid language between Russian and Ukrainian, and allowed them to develop their teamwork skills and conjure up creativity.
Creatively translating the poem allowed the pupils to explore different techniques and forms of writing to convey the tone and deeper meanings of the passage. For example, they were able to translate the extract into verse and poem form and experiment with creating the correct tone which proved challenging as they still had to capture the nuance.
also took part in the workshop, where pupils described the workshop as ‘inspirational’, ‘thought provoking’ and ‘a golden opportunity’ further proving the success of the day.
