The day opened with a keynote address from Chris Hines MBE, founder of Surfers Against Sewage and former Director of Sustainability at the Eden Project. Speaking about the concept of ‘intelligent activism’, he reflected on his experience of campaigning and delivering meaningful environmental improvements, encouraging pupils to think critically about how change can be achieved.
Pupils then took part in a series of interactive workshops exploring a wide range of topics, including the economics of sustainability, climate risks and mitigation in the City of London, sustainability transitions, green energy, and the role of science in building climate resilience. Sessions challenged pupils to consider not only environmental impact but also the complexities of achieving fair and effective transitions.
The day concluded with a panel discussion featuring professionals working across the sustainability sector. Panellists praised the pupils for their thoughtful questions and mature engagement with complex issues.
Contributors included representatives from Wasteknot, which partners with our caterers, Holroyd Howe, to reduce food waste by supplying ‘wonky’ fruit and vegetables and promoting seasonal, sustainable menus. Pupils also engaged with Wasteknot during a dining hall pop-up, which featured a broccoli tasting and a lively Q&A session.
Alumnus Michael Barnes (Class of 2015), now a Senior Consultant at Anthesis, shared insights into environmental consultancy and the frameworks organisations use to achieve net zero.
Laura McCullough, Climate Action Stakeholder Engagement Lead at the City of London Corporation, spoke about local climate initiatives, including urban greening and climate-resilient planting near the School.
The panel also included alumnus Ramin Dilmaghanian (Class of 1985), Managing Director of Furlong Energy, who discussed the expansion of EV charging infrastructure across major road networks.
Closing the day, Mr McBroom encouraged pupils to reflect on their own role in shaping the future:
“Understand the power of your personal agency and what small changes you can make in your everyday life.”
