How did CLS get you ready for the world of work?
At the tender age of 11, I began travelling into the City of London each day for school amongst the many thousands of London commuters. When I started work, I was ready for that journey I had already done a thousand times. CLS was the perfect place to learn and flourish, academically, and also to nurture my other loves including sport where I was travelling the country and abroad for table tennis competitions.
What was your first job?
In the summer of 1997, after law school, I spent the summer working in the litigation department of the law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer before moving to Brussels to do a stage in the competition law department of the European Commission.
Your biggest professional achievement?
I would have to say that this was when I made Partner in 2007, aged 33. I am also proud to have recently been awarded Freeman of the City of London.
Your most challenging professional moment?
Each day presents a differing challenge, whether that is advising sports stars on the full spectrum of legal work or founders of a business navigating the complexities of 3rd party investment documentation or a listing on the stock market.
What inspires and motivates you at work?
Each day brings a different experience but having such a variety of clients with demands across all sectors ensures the work is but the opposite of dull. As a corporate partner, I help companies with all their legal needs and journeys through their business lifecycle from their beginnings to founder exits and initial public offerings. As a sports lawyer. I advise professional athletes, working alongside agents, accountants and advisers, with ad hoc advice on all legal aspects of their careers, investments and personal lives.
One piece of advice for pupils and other Old Citizens about getting into your profession?
Whilst naturally obtaining the relevant legal qualifications to qualify as a solicitor, the key advice throughout is to persevere and go with your dream. Remember, our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall.
