The event featured traditional activities such as bracelet making, intricate papercutting, a chopsticks challenge, Peking opera face mask making and Chinese calligraphy, giving pupils a hands-on experience of Chinese culture.

The bracelet-making station was a hit, where attendees crafted red and gold bracelets symbolizing luck and prosperity. The papercutting workshop led pupils on how to change a red envelope into the shape of fish. Many pupils chose to make a Peking opera mask, and they did it very well, showcasing their artistic talents.

One of the highlights was the chopsticks challenge, where participants tested their skills by racing to pick up skittles, sparking plenty of laughter and friendly competition. The Chinese calligraphy station offered a more serene atmosphere, as attendees learned to write auspicious phrases with brush and ink under the guidance of skilled instructors. Mr. McBroom, under the instruction of Junior Sixth Form pupil Alex, had a go at writing ‘good fortune’ in Chinese characters, while Mr. Edmundson tried his hand at writing ‘Happy New Year’ as well.

The workshops provided an engaging way for the CLS community to embrace the spirit of the Lunar New Year, fostering cultural appreciation and connection. The event concluded with wishes for happiness and good fortune in the Year of the Snake.

Happy New Year! 新年快乐!
