The historic Old Library of the Guildhall rang with music, emotion, and celebration on Thursday, as pupils from across the City of London Family of Schools came together for the Handel ‘Big Sing.’
Accompanied by the renowned London Handel Orchestra, pupils performed twelve iconic arias by George Frideric Handel, each preceded by newly written recitatives crafted by pupils from City of London Academy schools. These creative additions brought fresh perspective and youthful voice to the timeless themes of love, loss, triumph, and nature.
The concert was conducted by Director of Music, Mr. Quesnel, with standout solo singing from Mr. Jacklin — both of whom have spent the past six months leading workshops across the City schools to prepare pupils for this monumental event. Their dedication culminated in powerful full-choir moments which were seamlessly interwoven with Handel’s orchestral works and dramatic spoken interludes narrating the story of the composer’s life.
The evening ended with a massed chorus performance of Handel’s iconic ‘Hallelujah Chorus’, filling the Guildhall with the sound of triumphant voices. The audience was left in awe as the pupils and orchestra united in one of the most well-known and stirring pieces in choral music.
The Guildhall was filled to capacity with proud families, pupils, staff and supporters. The event was a joyous tribute not only to Handel’s legacy but to the incredible efforts and talents of the City Family of Schools pupils.
