The City of London School Charitable Trust is a registered charity which exists, among other things, to advance education by providing bursaries to boys who have gained admission to the School but who would not otherwise be able to afford the fees. To support this, the Trust includes funds (including from donations and legacies and from the funds of the City of London School Bursary Trust) which are currently stated to be restricted to the provision of “bursaries”. The Trust wishes to amend the terms governing these funds to clarify that, in addition to bursaries to individual students, it is permitted to make “grants”.
This is a technical amendment, as the funds will still only be available to further charitable purposes in connection with the school. It is however considered that in practice, it is often most efficient to administer these funds by providing a grant to the school, which then provides free places and supports pupils with the associated costs (such as travel, school trips and uniform). The Trust wishes to ensure that this is properly captured in the purposes applying to the funds and so intends to apply to the Charity Commission to modify the wording accordingly
