Based on Kenneth Grahame’s much-loved classic and adapted by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes with songs by award-winning composers George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, this high-spirited show followed the adventures of Mole, Rat, Badger, and the flamboyant Mr Toad in a tale packed with wild escapades and valuable lessons about friendship, loyalty, and redemption.
Josh gave a convincingly arrogant and delightfully comic performance as Mr Toad, whose obsession with speed leads him to “borrow” a car—setting off a chain of chaotic events that lands him in prison and puts his beloved Toad Hall at risk. His portrayal was both energetic and nuanced, with a particular highlight being his charismatic delivery of the song Typical of Toad, performed at breakneck pace with infectious enthusiasm. His bright green sprayed hair was as unmissable as his stage presence.
Supporting characters also shone. Lorenzo’s earnest and sympathetic Mole contrasted beautifully with Tim’s more hard-edged Rat, who reminded the audience that Toad’s downfall was largely self-inflicted. Meanwhile, Madiline brought warmth and humour to the role of the jailer’s daughter, helping Toad escape by disguising him as her aunt in a hilarious and cleverly staged moment.
Myles’ turn as Chief Weasel was a scene-stealing highlight, especially during the spirited ensemble number We’re Taking Over the Hall. The villainous glee of the weasels almost made the audience root for their wicked takeover, thanks to the sheer energy and theatrical flair of the cast.
This joyful production was a testament to the creativity, collaboration, and dedication of the pupils and staff across both schools—an unforgettable adventure that brought the wild woods and winding rivers of Grahame’s world vividly to life.
