On Saturday 2 March, four eager debate teams from City of London School, containing two speakers each – Orson & Raphaël, Krish & Freddy, Delal & Enrico, Max & Jenson, went to the London School of Economics for the regional round of the International Competition for Young Debaters.
The International Competition for Young Debaters is the world’s largest junior debating competition, using the British Parliamentary format. A British Parliamentary debate consist of four teams, containing two speakers each, which are divided into two sides that speak for and against the motion. ICYD is a unique opportunity for pupils in Year 10 and below to participate in high-level debates against their peers from all around the world; teams come to the UK from as far as Canada and Asia. The finals are hosted alternately at the Oxford Union and the Cambridge Union.
Over 45 teams were present at the regional round, ardently debating many motions such as, “This House Would prioritise technological innovation over political change in fighting climate change.” It was an exciting and passionate day for everyone involved. Every team completed four different debates throughout the morning and afternoon.
Two pupils from the CLS team have progressed to the Finals Day
