Unlike conventional ground-based bird deterrent methods such as airport netting or scare tactics, the SKYGUARD team has taken a bold step forward by shifting the focus onto the aircraft itself. Their solution, the ‘SKYGUARD SONIC’, is a non-harmful, onboard device designed to both detect and deter birds in-flight using targeted sound frequencies. The goal? All-flight protection and an immediate threat response — not just safety within the airport perimeter.
“The current systems mostly work around airports, but we wanted to create something that works throughout the entire flight,” the team explained.
“SKYGUARD SONIC offers a way to protect aircraft at all times, reducing the risk of dangerous bird strikes in a completely humane and innovative way.”
Their cutting-edge concept caught the attention of judges at the prestigious Conrad Challenge, an annual international competition that empowers pupils to develop entrepreneurial solutions to global challenges in areas like aerospace, cybersecurity, health, and energy. Teams compete by designing and pitching their ideas and progressing through multiple rounds.
Competing in the Aerospace & Aviation category, SKYGUARD ranked in the top 10 teams worldwide, earning the title of ‘Alternate Finalists’. Should any of the top teams be unable to attend the Conrad Innovation Summit at the Houston Space Center, SKYGUARD will be invited to pitch their idea among global change-makers and industry leaders — with opportunities to win scholarships, receive patent support, and build invaluable networks.
