Year 11 pupils, Aru, Toranosuke and Sean recently hosted the 2024 London Juniors Debate Competiton. A fully pupil-run event, they hosted over 80 participants online from 13 different countries, including India, Zimbabwe, Canada, and Australia.
Participants, all aged under 15, debated topics ranging from ‘the morality of genetic modification technology’ to ‘whether work should be exclusively online or in-person’. With the diversity of teams they had, it was great to see interesting and different perspectives on these topics. The pupils set a fee of £20 entry per team raising a total just under £500 for the CLS 2024 charity World Child Cancer.
Having successfully organised this event, the pupils’ are now hoping to create a debate and communication non-profit organisation, hosting more competitions and workshops, specifically to make debate more accessible to more people.
