Holocaust Memorial Day

Friday, 28 January 2022

There has been a series of events this week in School to honor Holocaust Memorial Day.

On Wednesday 26 January, the day before Holocaust Memorial Day, Third and Fourth Form pupils participated in a Webcast, hosted by the Holocaust Education Trust, in which they heard the haunting testimony of Eva Clarke BEM. They heard about her parents’ time during the horrendous Nazi persecution of Jewish people during the Second World War, with the events leading up to and including her miraculous birth outside Mauthausen concentration camp, Austria, in 1945. This was underpinned with the theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day: ‘One Day’. There was then an opportunity for questions from the audience of some 700 UK schools and education providers.

The week's events culminated in an assembly this morning in our Great Hall, where staff and pupils attended to share thought-provoking words on remembrance and contemplation and to light candles for those who lost their lives.

Particular thanks go to our Jewish Society for organising so many of this week's events.
