Junior & Senior String Orchestras perform at St Lawrence Jewry Church
After a morning of intensive rehearsals and a quick packed lunch, the annual lunchtime concert at St Lawrence Jewry, Guildhall Yard, was ready to start. It kicked off with the Junior String Orchestra playing Vivaldi's Concerto for Strings, RV 121. Conducted by Miss Jones and joined by Mr McHardy on continuo, this was an enjoyable and impressive performance. Following this, the vocal quartet performed two pieces of Renaissance music, Thomas Tallis’ Hodie nobis caelorum and John Sheppard's I give you a new commandment. With this year being the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, it felt appropriate that there should be a piece from the Catholic, Sarum Use and then the Anglican Rite. Junior 6th former, Ziying gave us a tremendously virtuosic performance of Beethoven’s piano sonata no. 14 in C# minor, Moonlight.
The concert closed with Grieg’s Holberg Suite from the Senior String Orchestra. Again, Miss Jones conducted this work and leader, Hieu performed an excellent solo in the final movement. Well done to everyone involved.
