Lord Robert Winston gives talk at CLS

Friday, 12 January 2018

On Thursday, City of London School JSoc was very privileged to host Lord Robert Winston, IVF pioneer and award-winning geneticist. He delivered a thoughtful, nuanced but accessible talk on the relationship between religion and science, interspersed with reflections on his own career. It was wonderful to see the boys listening in absolutely rapt attention; they clearly felt inspired and encouraged in their studies. Lord Robert answered their questions in great detail, treating even the youngest as serious scientists, and dispensed sensitive advice for pursuing a career in science. He treated the boys with touching warmth, emphasising the need for science to be tempered by ethics and humanity, the role that faith and the arts play in science, and a wise warning to resist the temptation to think of science as truth. He advised the boys to “never be certain”, but it is certain that Lord Robert Winston was one of the most stimulating speakers JSoc has hosted.
