Chess Club Champions

Monday, 08 July 2019

2019 has been an unparalleled year for our Chess Club, culminating in a win at the National Schools U19 Chess Championships.

Back in September over 140 schools entered the competition to be sorted into regional groups. CLS were grouped with St Paul’s Girls’, Westminster and Highgate amongst others. Having emerged victorious as regional winners the team prepared themselves for the finals at Uppingham School in County Rutland in the last week of term.

After a strong start winning the round one match against Chepstow, the team were paired with Reading, last year’s champions. After a tough game, the CLS team pushed through to a fine win and held the 61-year-old trophy aloft for the first time as national champions.

This is a huge achievement for our boys who were superb throughout and thoroughly deserve the title National U19 Schools Champions 2019.
