Drawing on decades of experience in international diplomacy, Lord Patten offered pupils a detailed look at the challenges facing global politics in an increasingly volatile world. He highlighted the pivotal role of the United States in shaping international affairs, stressing the influence that any occupant of the White House exerts on global decision‑making.

The conversation then turned to Russia, exploring the security challenges posed by Russia and the impact of its actions on European stability.

Lord Patten also addressed the rise of China and the importance of careful, measured engagement in Anglo‑Chinese relations. One of the most intriguing topics for pupils was the discussion around the proposed “super embassy.”

To conclude, Lord Patten directed his attention to the pupils themselves, encouraging the next generation to step forward with curiosity, compassion and commitment.

“It is now your job to take an interest in, have compassion for, and work through the numerous issues that the 21st century has brought”

The event proved thoroughly compelling for all who attended. Lord Patten’s breadth of experience on the global stage, combined with his ability to place current geopolitical developments in context, made for a memorable and thought‑provoking afternoon.
