Excelling in Sport

City of London School has given me the opportunity to improve in a number of sports in a competitive but highly enjoyable manner. Joining the school in OG, I was selected for the under 12 football ‘A’ team and found my love of the game reinvigorated in this atmosphere.

On my first trip to Grove Park, I was astounded by the facilities that I would be able to use for the next 8 years. As I have moved up the school, I have seen the standard of football dramatically increase, owed largely to the on-site state-of-the-art 4G artificial grass surface installed 3 years ago, and it is now uncommon for a City team to finish a season without a trophy. I am always struck by how fortunate we are to use this pitch in the heart of Central London. There is enough training to keep the boys improving at a significant rate but teachers are understanding of the importance of prioritising academic work, and so training is run outside of school hours - either before school, during lunch break, or after school. They are very committed to the teams they run, putting on training sessions for boys during the holidays to help us remain fit, and organising a number of trips throughout the year, including an annual pre-season tour which in the past two years has been to Holland and Paris. No time is wasted on games afternoons as at the end of morning lessons pupils have lunch and are immediately on the coach to Grove Park, meaning no time is lost to the coach journey and boys can still play full-length matches. The school has also been very supportive of me pursuing cricket, both inside and outside of school.

As well as playing matches and training multiple times per week, I am able to use the school’s onsite cricket nets at any time. Although these two sports are the ones that I am primarily involved in, the number of sports I have tried at various times at City would be well into double-digits, and so would the number of sports on offer here that I haven’t played. I have some excellent memories of particular victories in my school career that will stay with me after I leave this summer, and I am immensely grateful for the opportunities that this school has offered me.
