Vernon Neville Stockton

Vernon Neville Stockton (Class of 1945) passed away peacefully on 20 June 2021 at North Middlesex Hospital, aged 92, after a short illness. He was a keen member of the John Carpenter Club for many years and along with his brother Derek Paul Stockton, was evacuated to Marlborough during WWII. Vernon was a contemporary of David Issacs, Leon Israel, Peter Jones, Peter Norton, Cyril Metliss and Gordon Pope amongst others. He was a keen sportsman all his life, playing rugby to county level and 1st XV for the Old Citizens over more than a decade after leaving school. He also played cricket, tennis and squash and he was a keen supporter of the Old Citizens Golfing Society over more than 60 years

Vernon had a lifelong deep interest in the history and traditions of the City and spent many happy times exploring its alleys and inns. He was a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards, also introducing two of his sons, Mark and Giles to the livery where Giles is the current Master. Vernon was a stalwart attendee of John Carpenter Club functions over the years and was widely known and respected by many Old Citizens as a loyal friend with an easy-going nature and ready smile.

After doing his National Service in the Royal Marines which he thoroughly enjoyed, Vernon spent his professional career in the wood pulp industry, based in London, chiefly at Price & Pierce & Finncell, where he negotiated international sales on behalf of Finnish, Swedish, UK, Canadian and US mills.
Vernon was married to his wife Cecilia, for 59 years until her death 6 years ago and they had three children, Mark, Paul, and Giles who were all scholars in the Chapel Royal Choir whilst at CLS.
