Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is highly respected and internationally recognised. It comprises of four sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. At Gold, participants also complete a residential section. It is popular at CLS: most Third Form (Year 9) pupils complete the Bronze Award, with large numbers progressing to the Silver and Gold. In a typical year over 200 pupils are active participants.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award helps pupils develop a wide range of skills including increased self-confidence, independence, a sense of responsibility, awareness of their potential, an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, and the ability to lead and work as part of a team. Equally important is that it provides an opportunity for fun and, in the case of expeditions, contact with the natural world. Developing an appreciation of the beauty of nature links to our broader sustainability goals.
Pupils are provided with support from an experienced group of teaching staff and the expeditions, although physically and mentally demanding, often provide pupils with some of their fondest memories of their time at the school. The year concludes with an Awards Evening and those who complete the Gold Award attend a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
Combined Cadet Force
Very few pupils imagine that they might fly an airplane as part of their CLS experience, but they most certainly can! The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is an educational partnership with the Ministry of Defence and is flourishing at CLS. Its primary aim is to enable the development of personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline. Pupils can choose to join in Third Form (Year 9) and opt for one of three sections: Royal Navy, Army or Royal Air Force. Through weekly syllabus training and residential camps, pupils enjoy a wide range of activities.
