A 24-strong group of Fourth Form pupils visited the offices of boutique law firm Simons Muirhead & Burton earlier this week to learn more about careers in law and the pathways into those careers.
Alongside a tour of the W1 offices, our pupils heard talks from ten solicitors in the firm, from a range of practice areas including commercial media, film and tv, crime, real estate, family, and employment law, who generously shared insights into their career journeys and their work, pitched at the young audience.
It was particularly interesting to hear about the various routes into the profession – no two of the speakers had similar journeys into and through their careers, and many had started with paralegal experience – which was an eye-opener for the pupils. The message was clear: Law is a career that you can do with any degree and any A-Levels.
We also heard about the Death Penalty Project, a legal action charity supported by SMB, that has been providing free legal representation in death penalty cases.
It was a hugely informative and insightful workplace visit. The value to young people of meeting professionals in the workplace cannot be understated and unsurprisingly the pupils were buzzing with enthusiasm about legal careers on the return tube to school.
