Each week, pupils in the Third Form have one afternoon off-timetable to visit various parts of London. Each visit is designed to acquaint pupils with the cultural and educational experiences on offer within the vicinity of CLS. Many of the locations that they encounter will not only complement the content from their lessons, but also enrich and bring to life many subjects . There are tasks to complete during each trip, and they are asked to complete a short evaluation, to help the pupils realise what they have learnt during the visit.
The first of these visits this term was to the Huntarian Museum in Holborn.
Pupils were introduced to John Hunter, who used innovative techniques to capture and preserve specimens, which were displayed throughout the museum.
The Hunterian Museum contains many preserved specimens, models, and different medical instruments used in the past.
Pupil Jonathan commented:
I found it interesting that proper sterilization in operations only came very recently, and that pain relief was not generally given to patients until the 19th century.
Near the end of the visit, a short video was shown about how operations are performed now, so that pupils could see what these discoveries led up to.
