The team, made up of Fourth Form pupils Jenson, Kai, Oscar, and Enrico, had previously qualified through some very competitive and thoughtful heat stages at CLS, attended by over thirty pupils, each equipped with highly inspiring and well-researched speeches on the theme: “The change I want to see”.
The joint final, with pupils Ivana, Aashritha, Eva, and Flora heading up the CLSG team, drew a crowd of over fifty pupils! The format of the competition required the presentation of a speech five minutes long, followed by a Q&A session with the audience; the judges were external specialists who look at content, structure, oracy, knowledge, eloquence, and many other mark points.
All eight competitors delivered well thought out speeches on the topic ‘The change I want to see” such as: “We need to change our education system”, “The high seas should be the world’s largest nature reserve”, “ Stop looking at me: women’s safety on public transport”, “The abolition of the death penalty”, “Breaking the silence on depression” and “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”.
Ultimately, it was a well-deserved and friendly draw, with the Years 7-8 category being won by Ivana and the Years 9-11 by Oscar. We have a fantastic Public Speaking program at CLS and we encourage everyone interested in public speaking to give it a try.
