The Olympiad brings together competitors from across the globe to tackle complex problems based on some of the world’s most fascinating and little-known languages. The individual contest consists of a six-hour paper demanding creativity, logic, and stamina, while the team contest challenges groups to collaborate on particularly intricate linguistic puzzles.
The UK team, which included CLS pupil Jamie and recent leaver Yipeng, rose impressively to the challenge. Highlights included a UK competitor producing the best solution worldwide to a problem on Gaahmg, a language spoken in Sudan. The team’s collective efforts were rewarded in spectacular fashion: across the squad, pupils brought home three gold medals, two silvers, a bronze and an honourable mention. To crown this achievement, the UK was awarded the prestigious Highest Average Score trophy, recognising the overall strength of the team.
There was further cause for celebration when Yipeng, joined the very select group of double gold medallists – having triumphed in both this year’s and last year’s Olympiads. To add to the success, the UK team which Jamie was a part of secured a silver medal in the team contest.
The experience was not only a triumph of skill and determination but also a chance to forge friendships with fellow linguistics enthusiasts from around the world. The pupils returned home with medals, memories, and immense pride in their achievements on the international stage.
