VEX Robotics is an exciting global platform that challenges pupils to design, build, and program robots to tackle complex tasks and compete against other teams. At City of London School, pupils have embraced this cutting-edge STEM opportunity by forming their own VEX Robotics teams. Pupils have had the opportunity to travel across the country to take part in tournaments, showcasing their creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork on a national stage.
First up was a trip to Stowe School, where the teams arrived to take on Push Back, the new VEX V5 game for the season.
For many, the step up from VEX IQ to V5 had been significant. Heavier builds, metal components, and more complex coding presented a fresh challenge. But this unfamiliar territory was exactly what made the prospect so exciting.
Team 10743A — Cognition acclimatised quickly, competing with the calm focus of pupils who relish solving problems. Each match offered a new lesson, and they carried these insights forward, building confidence with every round. Team 10743B — Vulcan, completely new to both V5 and competitive robotics, embraced the experience with enthusiasm. Their willingness to engage in alliances, strategy discussions, and the unpredictable dynamics of live matches made an immediate impression. Under the dome, and under pressure, the learning was fast, authentic, and unforgettable.
By the final rounds, both teams had shifted from tentatively exploring V5 to truly competing in it. The hall felt less daunting, the field less unfamiliar, and both teams left knowing they belonged.
Their next challenge came soon after at North London Collegiate School. The atmosphere was just as intense, but this time the teams brought experience with them. When Team 10743A was awarded the Design Award, it marked clear evidence of their growth and ambition as they move toward their next robot iteration.
Meanwhile, the school’s VEX IQ teams were building impressive journeys of their own across the region. Team 34701D — I’m Going to Be King of the Pirates climbed steadily through the match rankings at Paxman Academy in Colchester, ultimately securing the Skills Champion title and qualifying for the UK National Championships at the CLSG competition, months ahead of schedule. Team 34701C — Bob Jr reached the finals at their third event, the Wormley Halloween Special, earning a strong silver result and valuable competitive experience. Team 34701A — Vincibus made its second appearance at CLSG, gaining crucial insight into teamwork, field pace, and in-match strategic adjustment. At Wormley and CLSG, Team 34701D — Vanguard and 34701E also made their competitive debuts.
